The Little’s First Birthday

What fun that was! My daughter had her first birthday a couple of weeks back and we threw a little party for her.

In my brain, when you are on a pretty strict budget (like I always am) I try to focus on three things and let the rest fall into place.  The three things change with every event I do depending on the event, theme, time etc.  For Little’s birthday, I chose to focus on the invite, the food, and a few special decorations.  The rest was pretty simple…  Flowers here and there, a couple of streamers outside, booze, booze and more booze.

So, here we go.

INVITE : This gorgeous card screamed out to me in stereo and satisfied my obsession with chartreuse. Speaking of chartreuse, have you seen my couch? It’s chartreuse..I’m on a kick, don’t ask.  I am sure my husband is gagging.  I also have chartreuse bed linens, art and maybe a throw pillow or 6 that are chartreuse.  Anyway – here is a link to the adorable shop I got the invites from on Etsy called : Simplicity Papers Go check out her stuff – it’s so sweet, clean and pretty.  Shop owner is communicative, friendly and turned my things around VERY quickly.  She did a whole ‘nother set of invites for me after this that turned out ah-mazing. (more on that party later).

FOOD : Entry way favor table. Inside the big bowls,  I had little scoops for guests to scoop their own little goodies into little muslin bags that I attached a thank you card to that matched the invite from Simplicity Papers. I used old time-y candy because…yum.  And, they are pretty.  And, the candy bowls will actually be great to use at terrariums..you know..for when I feel like doing a little indoor gardening (what? no).

MORE FOOD : This is the buffet table I set up on our dining room table.  Please notice the darling garlands that I had custom-made to match the invite (ohmygod, I am THAT PERSON) from another awesome Etsy shop called Young Hearts Love.  She also was friendly, dependable, communicative and a pleasure to work with.  Her little garlands are now decorating my daughter’s room, and every time I go in there I feel happy.  Give her some Etsy love, will ya?

In addition to cake, we served a big green salad with goat cheese, pomegranate seeds, sunflower seeds and sliced pears with a lemon vinaigrette dressing.  Three different kinds of tea sandwiches – dill cream cheese and cucumber (because, you can’t have tea sandwiches and not include a cucumber), smoked turkey with rocket, cranberries and toasted pecans.  And, a roasted chicken salad with celery.  And melon skewers with strawberries.

And yes, those are LED candles.  Yall.  I gots kids at this thang, and paper poufs hanging above.  Don’t hate.

Below : Le Bar.  Because, you know.  It’s really for the adults at one year old’s party.  And maybe the mom because she might be someone who likes to have parties, and celebrate, and buy too much chartreuse. Ahem.

Notice more garland, and this time I used Young Hearts Love  little metallic clouds.  So sweet, they make my teeth hurt.  It was a real b. to get that thing centered though – note to self, STOP EYEBALLING everything.  Use a tape measure once in a while.

And last but not least, the CAKE.  This was made by Olga over at Polkadots Cupcake Factory here in Austin.  They did our wedding cakes and I just had to have them do Little’s birthday cake.  Olga matched the invite perfectly.  Red velvet with cream cheese icing…  It was so so so so good.

CAKE

And there you go!  Invite, food, decorations…

Side note – those of you that follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you might recognize the wood pieces on the table. I had my generous brother-in-law cut this big log from a tree my neighbor threw out into varying heights to use as trivets.  I wanted to create some depth and interest on the table.  I think they did just the trick.  No?

Thanks for reading!  I kinda feel like you all celebrated with us a bit, now.  Awe.

PS Coming up next : a LOVE party!

Hair Do? Or Don’t?

Finally made an appointment to see my main gal, Carla at Ron King Salon.  Isn’t it the best feeling to make a hair appointment?  I know, I know…that sounds a little trite.  I mean, the “best” feeling should be working at a soup kitchen.  Or donating time/money to a cause, or rescuing a dog.  And,  those are “best” feelings.

But, getting your hair done feels like a real indulgence!  Don’t you think?   I might seem like a priss, and mostly I am – but I am not a big salon/pedicure/facial/message type person.  I mean, I love all that stuff, I just don’t really do any of it..ever..  (Don’t look at my toes..)  I mostly walk around and hope people won’t notice that I need a manicure, or need a keratin treatment on my ends, or I could really use a facial.  I was in my twenties before I had my first pedicure (GASP!).  I in fact, have never had my eyebrows done by a professional (double GASP!).

Did I just lose you?

Anyway, my husband goes to Carla.   As do several of my friends, my photographer from my wedding, and (I think) a couple of random peeps from work..  She does great work, especially on someone like me who struggles with decisions about their own hair.  Which, is probably why I don’t go to the salon etc soon.  It’s work to analyze yourself, and then – what if you don’t like it once it is done – it takes SOOOOO long to grow/change etc. Because of all of this, I had nearly the same haircut for 15 years and my ex-boyfriend used to cut my hair in the kitchen (yes, really).

I started to feel like it was time to grow up and do something!  So, I went to Carla and to a real salon – woweee!  We have gotten to that place where I can just walk in and go – “HELP! What do I do, oh balayage master?  Hair whisperer, where do I go from here?!”

She looks at my hair, we look at images of hair, and then she does it and I think it looks great.  Doing hair is a real art form.

Anyway, I get to go next week.  YAY!  So, I am thinking about what we can do!  Here is where I am with it…

Do I go lighter?

Darker?

Somewhere in between?

Do I let it grow?

Or cut if off shorter?

Bangs?

Or, let ’em grow out further and do a blunt cut kinda thang?

Oh, decisions, decisions, decisions!

How do you figure out what color/cut/style you want?  Do you scour the interwebs for images?  Leave it all up to the hair dresser?

Don’t have a hairdresser and live in Austin? Go see Carla.  She rocks.

Outfit Post – Preppy Military – What I wore out last night

……is that what this outfit is?  Preppy Military?   I don’t know, but at least I have reached outside my yooose (yooouse = usual : for all you non-slang, phonetic device dependent writers) of vintage/preppy/grandmother “go to” theme.

Outfit: Genetic Denim “Shane” bottoms purchased through their website, Gap button down, splater painted scarf from “Something Else” purchased at Intermix Online, Clarks Originals desert boots purchased at Whole Earth Provisions Austin, jacket is vintage and purchased at Protoype here in Austin

Perhaps it’s preppy military.  And, perhaps it is warm enough to wear to an outside party at a local restaurant/bar called Bangers.  And, comfortable enough for one to wear out on an evening when you aren’t sure how much walking one is going to do due to the fact that 9 million F1 racing fans are going to be in town eating, drinking, taking up parking spaces, and spending money in our fair city.  Read: AWESOME.  And, by the way Austin knows how to do big events and big festivals right.  ACL, SXSW, FFF…  If you are reading this and haven’t attended one of the above.  Get here in 2013!

So, the details – last night the hubs aka “darlin’ man” and I took the bus downtown to Rainey Street to support Love-A-Bull at a Pints for Pits party at the before mentioned Bangers.  Ate a veggie banger made with beets and goat cheese.  Mmmm.  And, then we took a pedi-cab over to the happenings downtown.  Where we saw some super cool cars, listened to some music – including Tejano – watched some fancy flashing lights from some temporary stages set up for race fans.

Fast, mini Mini cars on a very sophisticated track. Take that Circuit of the Americas!

VROOOOOM

We also tried to sneak past the long line at The W (pshaw!), got busted (embarASSing) doing so…yipes.  So we skulked down the street and took the party elsewhere (someplace without a line, suckas).  We got served along side some gorgeous French ladies a HUGE glass of wine at Malverde by a surly bartender.   (What was his deal?!  Gorgeous French ladies!  What could be so bad?!)  Music was buuumpin’ – DJ Chicken George kicks serious butt-ola..  We were surrounded by people having fun, dancing, and speaking with foreign accents.  It was fun!

Malverde

In other news…Hubs and I decided we want to move to Europe to live before we die or get too old to walk down ancient stairways.  So there.

XOXOX
